Kind of want to start experimenting with some traditional art and more specifically canvas painting. Can anyone give some pointers for someone that is a complete n00b on the subject? How to set up the canvas, what paint works best, etc.

are you going to stretch your own canvas or are you planning on buying pre-stretched?

That's a good question, I guess it depends on if it's worth the hassle (time to setup and costs). Is there a major benefit in stretching your own?

i suggest starting off with prestretched canvas... you dont have to go thru the hassles of stretching the bitch and applying gesso (its like primer or whatever) and sanding it down and junk....

acrylics are easy to work with cuz u can cover up mistakes easier than with oils... and if you do cover something up you can sand it down with some fine sandpaper too...

acrylics can also be used as an adhesive type medium if you wanna fuck around with different shit on the canvas

i also use matte medium.. its an additive to the acrylic... i use it to help keep the paint wet longer, and it also helps with the fluidity of the paint...

ok im gonna stop typing up a book now

bye

Build up alot of anger inside and let it out on the canvas, without wrecking it of course :-p

been awhile since art history class, but could do some google refreshers of abstract impressionist as well as like van gogh and monet to look how the oldies did things. They'd really layer and cake on the paint. I guess in person people say it'd blow a persons mind how thick the paint was laid on and how many layers they used.
