Get a 11x14 photo canvas (normally about $30) for $8.99 w/ free shipping from ArtsCow. I just ordered a design I did for the calendar, I guess we will see how well it turns out.

http://www.artscow.com/Create/ShowProdu ... ductId=388

Checkout Code: 899CANVAS
Expires on: June 30, 2009

Just as soon as I find one awesome printing service.. I find another... and then another.. and then another...

How does ArtsCow differ from CafePress? Just by looking at the types of products.. it looks like ArtsCow really goes out there and tries to find unique things. At least a bit more uniqe than CP.

Good luck selling the piece.

What would be a suitable substitution for real canvas in painting? I want to paint, but I don't know if I can afford a real canvas when I'm just experimenting.

You could probably practice on something other than the final canvas. I don't believe they are that expensive at your local hobby store. You can also pencil in your idea before you paint it on the canvas.
