Right i'm trying to figure out screen sizes for web browsers. I know most people use 1024x768 but we all know that thats not the actual area of screen space on the screen after you take into account the scroll bar and the header toolbars. Was wondering if anyone knows of the various ACTUAL sizes??

i know i should be using % but its been screwing up to how i want it to look so trying this method out to see if it looks any better.

That's a good question, whenever I design a site here at work, I start with 760x600px (I still keep the 800x600 in mind). Perhaps it's 40px then, because with 760x600 people with 800x600 screens should not have to scroll at all.

Actually the mojority of people are using 800 x 600, you have to think about who the website is aimed for and work accordingly

nah 54% use 1024x786, 800x600 is down to 14% and 26% use higher.

check out the stats on w3schools:

Probably also depends on your target audience. Art/design websites can assume most of it's audience will be on a larger screen. Where as a maybe a bank website would have to assume nothing and cater to all.

But if you use 800x600 your safe, that's all.

I'd lean on 800x600 as well unless you're absolutely certain of the majority of the audience. We were kind of taught this in school and incase someone did have a higher display, we designed the site accordingly with extra graphic filler just so it wouldn't look as crappy.

When setting up our pages in school, I made a template of my browser window with scroll bars etc. and plugged that into photoshop and then designed in the white space accordingly. Gave me a little better idea of the extra space used up by the browser window.

even if it was 50:50 you should aim for the higher end, If you keep designing for inferior technology nothing will ever move forward. People might finally get bored of scrolling around and increase their res.

It all comes down to whatever the content of the site will be

your wrong splittingadams, its way lower than that, see my link. I think the only people still using 800x600 are shitty old pc users or old schools. The site is in flash so although shrinking works ok it just doesn't have the same impact. Its a portfolio site so guess its aimed at people in the design industry so in theory they would be using a better res... but meh dunno yet will crack this when its done.
